Background: Castiel is an angel of the Lord. He was sent to Earth for the first time in 2000 years to assist Dean and Sam Winchester, he believed, to stop the apocalypse, but they were beening tricked by his angelic superiors into bringing it on. When he first appears he is officious and efficient, all business. As he goes along doubt began to creep in along with other traits. Being around Dean caused him, very slowly, to relax just a little and he is more able to connect emotionally though he is still much more stilted than a human. He developed a fondness for Dean and came to feel protective of him. His role was mainly exposition and guidance though he was called away to do other business for Heaven on a regular basis.

After a short time with the Winchesters, Castiel was paired with another angel - Uriel. He told Sam and Dean it is because Uriel has specialist skills but it was also so he can keep an eye on Castiel who had been getting too close to his charge. However it is revealed that Uriel was working to bring on the apocalypse and killing any angels who refuses to join him. When Uriel tried to recruit Castiel, he refused. Urial tried to kill him, Castiel fought back but was losing when Castiel's former commanding officer, Anna, stepped in and killed Uriel to stop him killing Cas or anyone else.

After all this Castiel's allegiance began to waver as he struggled with what to do next. He cares for humanity and he feels he knows his Father. He does not believe what is happening is a result of God's orders. Castiel's superiors know he is wavering and they pull him back to Heaven to "re-educate" him. When he is returned to Earth his manner is cold, even more officious that it was on his initial arrival. He was once again sure of his goal, convinced the apocalypse will bring peace to earth but he is challenged by Dean who told him he would rather have his real pain over a false paradise and Castiel finally and completely, rebels against Heaven and tries to follow his original mission to help stop the apocalypse and keep Lucifer trapped in Hell. He sends Dean to stop the final seal being broken and stays behind to hold off the archangels who have come to stop them.

Castiel's efforts lead to him being killed by the archangel Raphael but this is not the end of him. He is resurrected by (he assumes) God and goes on to reunite with Dean and Sam and fights to find a way to defeat Lucifer and halt the apocalypse.
